Crowne Plaza Hilton Head Island Beach Resort, owned and managed by InterContinental Hotels Group, offers a number of work opportunities for students who are enrolled in hospitality, recreation, retail, engineering, and in all related degree programs. As these programs do not constitute management training, our recruitment efforts target students who have a minimum of industry related work experience, or who are looking to broaden their experiential backgrounds and supplementing their academic studies via a hands-on work experience in a resort environment. Interns successfully completing an internship with the Crowne Plaza are assessed for future job placement at the resort or within the InterContinental Hotels Group.
Internship programs are designed for students whose degree requirements include the completion of an internship, "externship", or practicum. The minimum duration is six months and a maximum of eighteen months. Interns are typically assigned to entry-level job classifications based on their background and experience, and their stated personal interests. Internships require job rotations at thirteen-week intervals. All interns are given documented performance evaluations after each job rotation by the supervisor and manager of the department to which they were assigned. Supplemental learning activities are designed to enhance the hands-on work experience.
Specifically, interns are given the opportunity to schedule and be paid to attend one management staff meeting each month as well as one classroom-style-training seminar each month. Resort executives and management staff facilitate training seminars. Interns are also paid to shadow a Manager On Duty one time during the course of their internship. In addition to any normally scheduled job rotations, interns are given the opportunity to cross-train in other positions and in other areas based on business demands. Interns may extend the duration of their internship program beyond six months. Approval from the student's college or university may be required.

International Student Programs: International students who are enrolled in hospitality degree (or related) programs abroad or in the United States are eligible to participate in our internship program. Placements are typically coordinated through the international student's college or university. Crowne Plaza Resort does not "sponsor" students for work visas or for work authorization in the United States. However, the resort works very closely with students' schools and with such organizations as the Association for International Practical Training (A.I.P.T.) and the Council for International Education Exchange ("Council") and will provide support documentation.
Summer Jobs: As an alternative to the Internship Program, students may be interested in job placement for a period of time shorter than six months. "Summer Job" opportunities are available in all of the areas listed above, and for those who are willing to make a minimum three-month commitment. "Summer Job" students are not paid to participate in the same "supplemental learning opportunities" as interns, however, may participate in these activities on an "off-the-clock" basis.
Intern Activities: Students may participate in all Crew Member activities, which are organized through the resort. Depending upon the season these include softball, bowling, golf, tennis, volleyball, basketball, Family Picnic, Spirit Rallies, a Holiday Party, and intern receptions.
On scheduled days off, interns may take advantage of the hotel employee discount when traveling and staying at other InterContinental Hotels Group and resorts including InterContinental Hotels, Crowne Plazas, Holiday Inns, Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites and Hotel Indigos. Interns are also given discounted rates on local golf courses and on tennis court reservations throughout the year.
Hours/Pay/Benefits: Interns are paid an hourly wage and are non-exempt. Depending upon business demands, interns will average between 32 and 40 hours per week. During peak business periods, scheduled overtime is to be expected. Overtime is paid at one and one-half times the hourly rate for all hours worked over forty in a work week. Hours worked may be less during slow periods.
As interns are considered "temporary" employees, they are not eligible to participate in most employee benefit programs with the exception of the hotel employee discount program.
Transportation: Transportation to Hilton Head Island, and to and from work is the responsibility of the intern. Depending upon the availability of company leased housing, commuting distances approach five miles. Interns are encouraged to have an automobile if possible. Otherwise, bicycles and ride-sharing are recommended. There is no public transportation system on Hilton Head Island.
Housing: Company-leased housing is available to students upon request. Housing may be limited and is available on a "first come, first served" basis. Apartments are furnished and the weekly rent per intern is $80. Rent includes power, water, and local telephone service. A non-refundable advance housing fee is required.
Academic Credit: Students whose degree programs require academic credit for the work experience may arrange this as well.
Graduating Seniors: Interns who have completed their college course work will be given top consideration for placement in regular full-time positions at the resort or within the Intercontinental Hotels Group system. Graduates may apply for a full-time position at any time during the course of the internship.
